Preservation of the bobbin lace tradition in Balatonendréd

Lace mixing is the pride of Balatonendréd, which has become a symbol of the village and the community. A rich, local treasure trove of motifs developed, making the Endred lace unique. Because it is connected by strong threads, many people feel that it is preserved, and the process of maintaining it has been undertaken by the Balatonendréd Municipality and the Primary School in an exemplary collaboration.

Since 1996, the local curriculum for lace mixing has been given a special place in the school (forms of lace teaching: lessons, professional circles, summer camp). As the custodians of the values of traditional folk culture, the key task here is to teach the rising generations and to educate them to respect and appreciate the heritage of their own past. The children get acquainted with even simpler movements, the history and tools of lace, at an individual pace, depending on dexterity, and then they can become a master of lace blending during the formation of attitudes.

Few communities today undertake to try to preserve the heritage of folk culture at the school level, in the process, and not to revive it. This also shows an example to a child and an adult from belonging together and from a sense of Hungarianness. The program also indirectly creates job opportunities for the rising generation.

The Balatonendrédi Municipality has a supportive role in preservation: it provides tools, seeks opportunities to appear, and seeks opportunities to present itself in many ways, from the press to the promotion of quality tourism. As a result of his efforts, he is the holder of the honorary title of “Endogy Lace” “Treasure of Somogy”, recognizing the nationally significant cultural significance of a county region, acknowledging the aspirations of those concerned to fill the past with new meaning and the root-creating power of preserving traditions. With this, a local value also becomes a social property.
